US Senator John McCain called the Libyan revolution against the regime of Gaddafi’s regime an example and an inspiration for the peoples of Russia, reports Agence France-Presse.

The statement was made at a press conference in Tripoli, where he and three other Republican senators arrived on September 29.

“We strongly believe that the Libyan people today are inspiring the people in Moscow. They have inspired and are inspiring the world”, said McCain.

For McCain this is his second visit to Libya within a year. In April, he traveled to Benghazi, where the then Libyan rebels were based. During that visit, the senator expressed his support for opponents of Muammar Gaddafi and invited the US to recognize the rebel National Transitional Council (this was done in July 2011).

As reported by Associated Press, during the visit, McCain and the senators who came with him, Mark Kirk, Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio, met with the political leader of the Libyan rebels, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, and other senior representatives of the new government of Libya.

Previously, Libya was visited by the heads of England, France and Turkey. The international community has largely accepted the government of Libyan rebels, and in mid-September 2011, the National Transitional Council of Libya was able to represent the country at the UN.
