“They were Carried on the Wings of the Wind, Far from the Heart of the Caucasus Mountains…”

On March 8, 2008, the United Nations, along with many parts of the world, celebrated International Women’s Day to acknowledge the development and progress achieved by women in human society over the years, as well as their resilience in the face of the many challenges and circumstances their nations have endured throughout history.

This remarkable and inspiring humanitarian occasion reflected the vision of the United Nations Delegates’ Women’s Club (UNDWC), an association of women delegates and wives of delegates to the United Nations. On March 11, 2008, under the patronage of Mrs. Ban Yoo Soon-taek, a prominent cultural event was held in collaboration with the “Women for Peace” project in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations. This event featured the Celebration for Peace as part of the International Women’s Day Competition. The occasion showcased a variety of special multicultural activities that celebrated cultural diversity and creativity, including music, song, dance, folklore, and performances representing numerous cultures and continents from around the world.

The most captivating performance of the evening, according to audience reception and reactions, was an extraordinary display by a group of Circassian men and women. Their exceptional performance filled the General Assembly Hall with enthusiastic applause and appreciation.

Helen Yousfi, wife of the Algerian Ambassador to the UN and head of the Women for Peace project, introduced the Circassian performers with words that resonated deeply with the audience. She said:
“Once upon a time, there was a nation living in the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, somewhere in Eastern Europe. Some of them were blown away from their homeland by the winds, like leaves scattered to countries across the world. They are here with us tonight, on this magical evening of peace in the UN General Assembly Hall. They represent wounded nations who refuse to disappear into the night and fog of oblivion. And so, they return this evening through the light of day. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming the Circassians.”

After the performance concluded, a voice came over the loudspeakers, expressing admiration:
“What an incredible performance. Thank you, fire dancers!”

The message of the evening was clear: for all those with a deep sense of justice, there is a constant call to uphold and protect it.
