Staunton, February 18 – The Kremlin is well aware that there would be mass protests if it sought to abolish the non-Russian republics all at once as LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky proposes; and consequently, Shamil Sabirov says, it has adopted a salami tactic approach one in which many will not see that each move is a step to the same end.
Non-Russians need to recognize how each of these moves fits into this overall plan and take steps to raise the costs to Moscow of taking any one of them, the Tatar analyst says. UPDATE: The original story is not true. I am grateful to an alert reader who called this to my attention. And I regret being misled or misleading others. Moscow in fact isn’t planning to cut these letters out. But the reaction ascribed to the Circassians tells something important about the sensitivity of the language issue in all its complexity.
Staunton, February 19 – Olga Vasilyeva, the Russian minister of science and education, five days ago announced that as part of a new orthographic reform, seven letters now part of the Russian alphabet will be dropped as of 2020, a change that not only Russian traditionalists but Circassian linguists oppose. Для меня вопрос о том, как записываться в ходе переписи 2020 года, не стоит. Уже в ходе прошлой переписи в графе “национальность” у меня написано “черкешенка”.
Я училась в советской школе в Майкопе, в Адыгее. В советских городских школах, как известно, практически отсутствовало то, что называется «региональный компонент». Родной истории и культуре нас не учили. История Адыгеи в школьных программах начиналась с 1917 года, когда Советская власть якобы вытащила из темноты рабства и невежества несчастных забитых темных горцев. В лучшем случае мы знали имена героев гражданской войны и слышали победную поступь первых пятилеток. Поэтому историческая память и знание о родной культуре могли сохраняться и передаваться только через семью. Через рассказы старших мы знали о мудрой Сатаней и прекрасной Адыиф, о Тлепше, закалившем при рождении героя Саусрыкъо. И о том, что за Черным морем тоже живут черкесы. Мне оставалось непонятным, почему мы называем себя «адыгейцы». Тем более, что в доме хранилась метрика моего деда – «Намитоков Юсуф Кадырович, 1904 года рождения, черкес». Read more

Staunton, February 18 – In the 1920s, Stalin divided up the Circassians into four major “nations” as part of his effort to block any efforts of that deported nation to restore a single republic, attract back millions of its co-ethnics from abroad, and create a powerful bulwark against Russian control of the Caucasus.
