For Russia Now, There are Two North Caucasuses Not One

Paul Goble

Staunton, September 20 – Many Russians as well as outside observers routinely speak of the North Caucasus as if it were a unified whole when in fact there is a deep divide between its eastern portion which was Islamicized far earlier and remains more Islamic to this day and the western part which has had a different history.

Indeed, one is almost justified in speaking of two North Caucasuses not one at least in terms of the Russian presence and control and of the nature of national movements and challenges to Moscow. Read more

More than Half of North Caucasians Say Their Lives Became Worse in 2019, New Poll Finds

Paul Goble

Staunton, September 9 – Fifty-six percent of the residents of Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia and Daghestan say their lives have become worse in 2019. Only 33 percent said their lives had become better, a gap of 23 percent and one that is far larger than the difference of six percent found in a similar poll in 2017.

The poll of 1200 people selected as a representative sample in Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia, and Daghestan by the Medium Orient Agency for the Prague-based Caucasus Times strongly suggests that North Caucasus residents believe their lives are getting worse (caucasustimes.com/ru/opros-bolee-poloviny-zhitelej-severnogo-kavkaz-stali-zhit-huzhe-v-2019-godu/). Decade of Relative Stability in North Caucasus Coming to an End, Neroznikova Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, July 3 – The decade of relative stability in the North Caucasus, a period during which the authorities were not able to resolve “the basic problem of the region,” the clash between Islamic fundamentalism and a corrupt and lawless civil power, is rapidly coming to an end, according to Yekaterina Neroznikova, a journalist who has long worked in the region.

She tells Sovershenno Sekretno commentator Anton Krivenyuk that there are likely to be leadership changes in Daghestan and Chechnya as well as more corruption scandals and that these things will only exacerbate the underlying problems of a region that remains divided into “ethnic quarters” (sovsekretno.ru/articles/kto-mozhet-rabotat-toporom-/).
