More than Half of North Caucasians Say Their Lives Became Worse in 2019, New Poll Finds

Staunton, September 9 – Fifty-six percent of the residents of Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia and Daghestan say their lives have become worse in 2019. Only 33 percent said their lives had become better, a gap of 23 percent and one that is far larger than the difference of six percent found in a similar poll in 2017.

The poll of 1200 people selected as a representative sample in Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia, and Daghestan by the Medium Orient Agency for the Prague-based Caucasus Times strongly suggests that North Caucasus residents believe their lives are getting worse (caucasustimes.com/ru/opros-bolee-poloviny-zhitelej-severnogo-kavkaz-stali-zhit-huzhe-v-2019-godu/). Kalimatov Confirmed by Popular Assembly as Ingush Head

Staunton, September 8 – With 27 votes in favor (out of 32), Makhud-Ali Kalimatov was confirmed by the republic’s Popular Assembly as head of Ingushetia for a five-year term, an election with no surprises that was described by one writer as “a profanation of democracy under the pretext of stability” (6portal.ru/posts/выборы-главы-ингушетии-профанация/). Kalimatov Calls on Ingush People to Ignore Boycott Calls and Vote in Municipal Elections

Circassians Call for All Ingush Prisoners to Be Treated as ‘Brothers’ and Returned to Ingushetia

            Staunton, August 4 – The leaders of various public organizations in Kabardino-Balkaria are calling for Nalchik jail officials to treat Ingush opposition figures as brothers who are being “repressed” until they can be returned as the law requires to their native Ingushetia. Only in that way can the rights of those under detention be guaranteed.

            Marks Shamurzov, a Circassian who heads the Association of Victims of Political Repressions, took the lead in making that argument at a meeting in Nalchik four days ago.  He was unanimously supported by others at the session and by lawyers who represent some of the 29 Ingush prisoners now being held in KBR facilities (zamanho.com/?p=11387).
