Russian authorities say two suspected rebels were killed in a raid on a building in the troubled southern region of Kabardino-Balkariya.
Interior Ministry representative Marina Kyasova said two local residents were also injured in the clash today between the insurgents and government forces in the city of Baksan.
Kyasova says authorities are searching for a number of other rebels possibly involved in the clash.
Kabardino-Balkariya lies west of Chechnya, which has been plagued for years by an Islamist-inspired insurgency.
Government forces have registered some notable successes this year in targeting leading figures within the Kabardino-Balkariya wing of the broader North Caucasus insurgency.
