Russian Soldier Shot Dead In Chechnya – Prosecutor
GROZNY, Russia (AFP)–A Russian solider was shot dead in front of his home overnight in the tense southern region of Chechnya, a prosecutor said Friday.
Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the soldier, a noncommissioned officer named Dokuyev Timirbek, in the southeast Chechen town of Shalinsk, said spokesman Mariam Nalayeva.
“He died on the spot of multiple gunshot wounds,” the official told AFP, adding the attackers stole a pistol and automatic rifle.
Attacks on Russian security forces are common across much of the mainly Muslim northern Caucasus including Chechnya, where Russia has fought two wars to crush separatist rebels since the 1991 Soviet collapse.
