KBR Clash in September Continues to Cast Dark Shadow on the Caucasus

Paul Goble

Staunton, October 8 – The September 19 clashes between Kabards and Balkars over the commemoration of a battle three centuries ago appear to have had led to the deaths of two residents of the KBR, a development that likely would be attracting far more attention were it not for the events in Ingushetia. Russia hasn’t Formed a Modern Civic Nation but Rather an Imperial Russian One, Portnikov Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, October 8 – There are three reasons why the Russian Federation is unlikely to fall apart in the near future, Ukrainian political analyst Vitaly Portnikov says. First among them is that while Russia hasn’t been able to establish a contemporary political nation, it has created “a certain imperial Russian nation which is the basis of the Kremlin’s ‘Russian world.’” Read more

Western Powers, Circassian Elites to Blame for 1864, MGIMO Historian Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, September 25 – In what may become a new theme for Russian propaganda, MGIMO historian Vladimir Degoyev says that the departure of hundreds of thousands of Circassians from the North Caucasus to the Ottoman Empire was the result of the Great Game between Russia and the West in the 19th century and of the shortcomings of Circassian elites.

In an article in the new issue of Yuzhnorossiiskoye obozreniye, Degoyev attacks what he describes as the politicized oversimplification by Circassian activists of what happened 150 years ago following the Russian occupation of the Circassian portions of the North Caucasus (kavkazoved.info/images/myfls/2018/ap2018-97.pdf pp. 84-91). Setting the North Caucasus Ablaze is Easy; Putting Out the Flames is Hard

Paul Goble

Staunton, September 23 – Because of its earlier bitter experience, Moscow’s policy in the North Caucasus over the last decade has been to use subsidies and force to make sure that ethnic and religious conflicts do not break out in the region since setting the North Caucasus ablaze is easy – there is a lot of “dry tinder” around – but putting out the conflagration is hard.

That makes some of Moscow’s recent actions, including both intentional moves and failures, surprising and has led some to ask this week “why did the powers that be allow the outburst of the Kabardino-Balkar conflict?” (onkavkaz.com/news/2403-v-kbr-promorgali-konflikt-pochemu-vlasti-dopustili-vspyshku-kabardino-balkarskogo-protivostojan.html).
